How and where rose quartz is formed

A common and very popular member of the quartz mineral family, rose quartz is found in large quantities in several locations worldwide, including South Africa, the United States, Brazil, Japan, India and Madagascar. Magmatic pegmatites formed from crystallised magma are the main source of most rose quartz crystals, however they can also be found in hydrothermal veins. The presence of titanium as the crystal forms is responsible for its rosy hue.

Although worn as jewellery in ancient Rome and Assyria, the use of rose quartz as a talisman was considered more significant to ancient cultures. A symbol of ownership, it was used as a seal by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans to signify that a deal had been done. Egyptians also believed that rose quartz could be used cosmetically to prevent ageing. Medical practitioners in the early ages were known to use rose quartz in their healing potions, believing that the “love stone”, as it was known, would balance the emotions.
