How and where tanzanite is formed?

Tanzanite was first discovered in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, over fifty years ago, in 1967. Deposits of Tanzanite can now only be found in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania making it one of the world’s rarest crystals.

Known as blue zoisite, it is a calcium aluminum silicate which forms in prisms. Tanzanite ranges in colour from deep ocean navy to light icy blue. The most popular tanzanite crystals are a deep blue with enchanting purple hue.
